Supports for English Language Learners
Supports for Our Students who are English Language Learners
The Office of Student Services supports students in achieving proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. Registered Newport student who have a language other than English used at home are screened for proficiency in the English language. We value parent input and also seek the input of students' prior teachers, report cards/transcripts , and available information regarding the student's literacy in his/her home language. Based upon a review of all this information, some students are identified as English Language Learners (ELLs.)
Parents of English Language Learners have many rights, and receive information about their child's identification and progress toward proficiency. If you are a parent and have any concerns or questions about your rights, please contact your school principal or the Director of Student Services.
English Language Learners are eligible to receive supplemental supports designed to accelerate learning and usage of the English language. These supports target instruction to develop skill in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. The expectation is that students who are ELLs will be taught and will meet grade-level academic achievement standards with support, and graduate from high school at the same rate as other students.
Our district, and all of Rhode Island, uses the World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards for English Language Proficiency. These standards encompass:
