FOR PARENTS
Ocean State Transit 401-399-3229
Transportation on a school bus is provided from designated bus stops for elementary school students who live more than three-quarters of one mile from their school (one half mile for Kindergarten) and for middle school students who live more than one (1) miles from their school and for high school students who live more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their school.
Students with special health conditions may be provided transportation from their homes to their schools. Students are assigned specific buses, bus stops, and pick up and drop off times at the beginning of the school year and students are given bus passes reflecting this information.
Conduct on School Buses
Appropriate student behavior is essential to the safe operation of the school bus. The slightest distraction to the driver may have significant student safety consequences. Riding the school bus is a privilege. This privilege may be temporarily denied or permanently revoked if misconduct jeopardizes the safe operation of the school bus or the safety of students riding the bus. School suspension is a possible sanction for bus misconduct.
Student Supervision
The school district has supervisory responsibility of elementary and middle school children once they board the bus in the morning. Parents are responsible for the supervision and safety of elementary and middle school students receiving bus transportation from the time these children leave home in the morning until the time they board the school bus. The same rule applies at the time of discharge from the bus on the way home from school. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will not be left at the bus stop unless an adult is there to greet them. If no adult is present at the time the bus arrives at the bus stop, the bus driver and bus monitor will keep the child on the bus and bring him/her back to the Claiborne Pell Elementary School, 35 Dexter Street, Newport, RI where the parents may then pick up their child. The Pell School Phone Number is (401) 842-1900.
Alternative Busing Requests
The school district does not transport students to alternative locations, such as after school day care sites. However, it does reserve the right to grant exceptions to students on a first-come, first-served basis, if the following conditions are met: the student is eligible for transportation according to district policy, there is an existing bus stop within the walk range of the daycare facility (NO additional stops will be made) and the bus has at least 20% of the seats vacant.
Eligibility Requirements for Transportation
REQUEST: The request for transportation must be submitted at the school or the placement office.
NOTE: the mileage is calculated from the student’s front door to the school.
ADDRESS CHANGES: All address changes must be completed at the school or the placement office.
